Now With Emergency Reverse Charge! - Victron Orion XS DCDC Charger Range
The Orion XS is a DC to DC Charger which facilitates charging of the auxiliary Lithium Batteries of an RV system, when the vehicle is running. Victron have gone one better and created an Emergency Reverse Charge function, which charges a flat starter battery from the auxiliary battery, so the engine can be started again!
Better AGAIN! - If you have an existing Orion XS Charger without the Emergency Charge feature, all you need to do is update the Victron Connect App to V6.43, go in to the settings and update to the Orion XS to V1.15 and the Emergency Charge feature will appear on the App!
During an emergency reverse charge, the Orion XS can reverse its normal charge direction where energy flows from the auxiliary battery to the start battery. When the process is viewed in the VictronConnect App, this reversed flow is shown as negative input.
An emergency reverse charge operates for a predetermined duration and consists of two phases:
Emergency reverse charge, 15 minutes at 25A. The Orion XS utilizes energy from the auxiliary battery to recharge the starter battery. The app displays Emergency reverse charge along with the remaining time.
Settling period, 5 minutes. The charger is turned off to prevent energy from being drawn from the starter battery or the alternator. This allows the starter battery to stabilize and the engine to be started. The app shows Battery ready along with the remaining time. If required, a second Emergency Charge can be performed.
Once the settling period concludes, the Orion XS returns to normal operation.
The starter battery is charged to a maximum of 14.4V or 28.8 V, depending on the starter battery voltage that has been set.
To prevent deep discharge of the auxiliary battery, the Orion XS keeps the auxiliary battery voltage at either 12V or 24V.
As the auxiliary battery approaches this level, the reverse charge current is reduced, so that as much energy as possible is transferred without deeply discharging the auxiliary battery.
If the auxiliary battery is at or below this level when the emergency reverse charge initiates, the function will still operate, but no current will be transferred.
Current will only start to flow if the auxiliary battery voltage increases above this level again during the charging process, for instance, if another charging source is charging the auxiliary battery.
So clever! See it installed in a system in an Iveco 4x4 Dual Battery system and a Super Duty F350!
