Far-flung and Off the Grid for Four Months

David and Christine enviably live in stunning Ningaloo, for 4 months a year in their off the grid 2007 Billabong Kalbarri Caravan. Yes please!

Their 23’ long caravan was sporting:

  • A 1500 Watt Inverter

  • Three 80L Trailblaza fridge/freezers

  • A 40L Engel freezer

  • Occasional use of an 800 Watt microwave

  • An array of conveniences such as kettle, bread maker, vacuum packer, hairdryer and chargers for laptop/mobiles & rechargeable lights & batteries

  • And a boot stuffed full with 800Ah’s of heavy AGM Batteries and a spaghetti like mass of wiring attached to Chargers and Controllers.

With the boot chock-a-block full, grubby items like floormats, which are normally stored in the boot, had to be stored under the bed, which meant dust, sand and dirt in the van and over equipment.

Ready for some room, weight loss and fresh solar, David removed the tired AGM batteries and the 2x 123W, 15 year old solar panels and came to us.

We cleaned out the boot, freeing it up for storage, and turned our attention to the under-bed space to design and build a Custom 400Ah RV Lithium System

Our Custom 400Ah RV Lithium System includes:

  • CUSTOM BUILT RVLSA 400Ah LiFePO4 Battery Pack

  • CUSTOM BCU (Battery Control Unit)

  • 240A CHARGE PROTECTION BCU

  • 100A LOAD VAN POWER BCU

  • 200A LOAD INVERTER CONTROL BCU

  • VICTRON BMV-712 BLUETOOTH BATTERY MONITOR which links to LOAD BCU’S to switch off battery load outputs from Low State of Charge or Low Voltage

  • 2 X 45A VICTRON MPPT SMARTSOLAR (BLUETOOTH) SOLAR CONTROLLERS (Front and rear of the roof)

  • 30A VICTRON MPPT SMARTSOLAR (BLUETOOTH) SOLAR CONTROLLER (External solar with 50A yellow Anderson plug on the side of the van and links to RVLSA 600W DCDC Vehicle Charger)

  • 2 x VICTRON 30A IP22 SMART BLUETOOTH 240V BATTERY CHARGERS

  • 1 x RVLSA CHARGER ISOLATION SYSTEM which switches off the 240V Chargers when the Inverter is running.

Solar capacity on completion

  • Total Roof Solar amounts to 1395W coming from 6 x 175W and 3 x 115W VICTRON solar panels

  • Almost double the input from 50A (with the use of a cumbersome array of 1000W's of Portable Panels) to 90A all coming from the roof.

  • The system also has the capability to add another 30A of Solar Input.

Being so roomy and clean under the bed, David and Christine shouldn't be surprised to find some stow-aways in want of a Ningaloo escape themselves!
